Concerning the origin of the American game of base-ball there exists considerable uncertainty. A correspondent of Porter's Spirit of the Times, as far back as 1856, begins a series of letters on the game by acknowledging his utter inability to arrive at any satisfactory conclusion upon this point; and a writer of recent date introduces a research into the history of the game with the frank avowal that he has only succeeded in finding "a remarkable lack of literature on the subject."

This book outlines the history of baseball, outlines the rules of playing the game, the tactics to employ, and really HOW TO PLAY BASE-BALL

An Introduction How to PLay Baseball

Front Cover12Captain Scragg will always have a go, and here we have a tale from the last century both hilariously funny in some parts and with a tinge of sadness in others as the author charts the voyage of the tug captain and his crew over the seas to faraway islands where customs are are different, where innocent actions can have almost disastrous consequences. There are discoveries ,violence, pain and fortitude, trials of adversity ,both on board and on land, told in a manner not exactly politically correct for today's society, but a gripping and raw tale ,probably more so for the manner in which it is told. You live the emotions of the human conflicts and interactions between the crew on their voyage of rapidly changing conditions and fortunes, and upon their arrival ,the interaction between a race of indigenous people who just happen to have a different coloured skin, different language, different customs ,and totally different sense of humour.A rollicking good read ,guaranteed to dispel any gloom that lurks  in the background. Enjoy

Dog Boxshot 200 x 200Hutchinson's Popular & Illustrated Dog Encyclopaedia was first published by Hutchinson & Co., Ltd., in 1929: like many books of its day was published in weekly parts.
It would seem that initially they were not sure how many parts there were to be, as on the front covers of the early magazines it says "in about 50 weekly parts".
In the end there were fifty six parts comprising 1990 pages with over 2,000 illustrations.

Complete copies of the "book" in their bound folder now change hands at prices ranging as high as three hundred pounds or more.

It could be safely described as a labour of love, and proved to be immensely popular, however one must bear in mind that while many of the old remedies hold good still, there have been many advances in the world of Veterinary Science, in diagnosis and treatment, and you should always consult contemporary professional advice

FRONT COVER 150 h x 125wA book to appeal NOT just to Vegetarians.

This is a Vegetarians delight, written some eighty years ago; it proves that the vegetarian movement is not just a modern fad, and that there are many people, not just vegetarians who enjoy the diversity of a full range of vegetables cooked to perfection to bring out the full and different flavours.

This book covers so many vegetables; it would seem difficult to become bored savouring all the different types of vegetable.
All the recepies are tried and tested, and many will have fallen into disuse with the passage of time. However how many times have we heard that the old recepies are the best recepies, and bring out the flavours to the fullest without a microwave in sight?

A Vegetable Cook Book

Box shot 200 x 200 old liverpoolThe "Recollections of Old Liverpool," contained in the following pages, appeared originally the Liverpool Compass, their publication extending over a period of several months.
The book was first published in 1863 and gives a personal insight into the city of Liverpool .
Those who have recorded the green memories of an old man, as told while seated by his humble "ingle nook" have endeavoured to adhere to his own words and mode of narration-hence the somewhat rambling and discursive style of these "Recollections"-a style which does not, in the opinion of many, by any means detract from their general interest.

November, 1863.
I was born in Liverpool, on the 4th of June in 1769 or '70. I am consequently about ninety-three years old.  My friends say I am a wonderful old man. I believe I am.  I have always enjoyed such excellent health, that I do not know what the sensation is of a medical man putting his finger on my wrist.  I have eaten and drunk in moderation, slept little, risen early, and kept a clear conscience before God and man. My memory is surprising.  I am often astonished at myself in recalling to mind events, persons, and circumstances, that occurred so long ago as to be almost forgotten by everybody else:-       and what follows is a delightful account of the city of Liverpool as remembered by the narrator over his lifetime, some ninety years old
